Spend a few days in the cool capital of Austria when you book flights to Vienna from Southampton. Packed with attractions that will fill your photograph albums and stylish cafes that will fill your belly (slice of Sachertorte anyone?), the ‘City of Dreams’ is ideal short-break territory, whatever the time of year.

There are no direct flights from Southampton to Vienna, for non-stop services to Vienna International Airport (VIE ) you can fly from London or Bristol – the two closest departure points to Southampton. Take off from Southampton on connecting services with airlines such as KLM and Austrian Airlines.

Close to the city, transfer options from the airport are plentiful and good value. Take a bus for 8 euros (a 40-minute journey); hop in a taxi and pay around 30 euros; or jump on one of the two train services that connect the city and the airport. The City Airport Train (CAT) is fast, though expensive at 19 euros for a return ticket. Services on the S-Bahn take a little longer (around 25 minutes), with one-way tickets from 3.90 euros.
