Touch down on flights to Finland and open your eyes to one of Europe’s most magical destinations.
The cities are one thing: cool, inviting, with festive fun in winter and blissful summer days. Check out the harbour-side charms and green spaces of trend-setting capital Helsinki, or step off the beaten track and visit Tampere and Turku.
Journeys along the coast, where the chilly Baltic rushes to greet the land, are another highlight. Take this route for summer sailing, fishing and rock pooling, plus beaches and traditional villages.
Or visit Finnish Lakeland, with its vast mirror-like lakes of blue, forest-flanked hiking trails and hideaway cabins.
Despite all these temptations, it is for Finnish Lapland that many book Finland flights. Skies that dance with northern lights, ski runs that sweep through the wilderness, summertime’s dazzling, confusing, amazing midnight sun - and who could forget Santa Claus? You certainly won’t if you journey deep into Lapland during the most wonderful time of the year.
Low-cost flights to Finland from UK airports are easy to find, especially if you want to land in Helsinki. Direct flights are only available to the capital. But don’t despair if your dream lies elsewhere; TravelSupermarket can show you a selection of connecting flights to Finland that probably cost less than you think. London to Finland flights are operated by British Airways and Finnair, both of which fly from Heathrow to Helsinki several times a day. Finnair also have flights from Edinburgh and Manchester airports, while Norwegian flies from Gatwick airport.
To reach Helsinki from other UK airports or for flights to Finnish cities outside of the capital, you will need to take connecting flights. Air France, KLM, Air Baltic, SAS and Lufthansa all offer departures from around the UK to Helsinki (HEL).
For flights to Oulu (OUL) you will need to fly via Helsinki with Finnair or Norwegian or via Stockholm with SAS. Departures to Turku (TKU) are also via Helsinki with Finnair and through Stockholm with SAS.
Tampere, meanwhile, can be reached via Helsinki with Finnair or via Bremen by buying two separate tickets with Ryanair.
Seasonally you will also find package flights to Rovaniemi (RVN) and Kittila (KTT) to support either ski trips, Northern Lights or Santa Lapland visits operated by carriers such as Thomson and Thomas Cook. You can also reach these destinations via Helsinki with Finnair.
Ahh, hero of holidays, we meet again… looking to get from airport to city with ease? You’re in the right place…
Land at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport (HEL) and you have a number of onward transportation options, especially during the busier summer months.
Use the Finnair bus transfer service to reach Helsinki for six euros twenty per person (a 35-minute journey); public buses are a fraction cheaper at five euros but take a little longer (up to 45 minutes). The railway connection that opened in 2015 is also a good option. Tickets cost five euros and the journey time is 35 minutes. An average taxi fare between city and airport is 45 euros.
At other airports in Finland, public bus services, taxis and airport shuttles are the best options. Alternatively, pre-book car hire in Finland and enjoy the freedom of the open road.
