Ready to Travel Super to atmospheric, magical Peru? Let’s go…
That mist-shrouded peak, those neat shells of ancient homes, that mountain backdrop: it’s all so familiar, so mesmerising. The lost (and found) Inca city of Macchu Picchu, high up in the clouds of Peru, is the nation’s most potent image for tourists.
Hike back along the trail and Peru reveals itself as a diverse destination. It’s a place where the Amazon snakes through dense rainforest, past isolated tribes and a kaleidoscope of flora and fauna; where the Pacific Ocean breaks against golden beaches and spice-coloured cliffs; where the Andes form a snow-capped national spine; and where Lima, the buzzing capital, stretches its city limits with nearly 10 million residents. Join them to eat like a king, dance like a pro and party like there’s no tomorrow (and when tomorrow comes, shake off the night before with a tour of the historic city centre).

It’s one of the biggest cities in South America, so if you’re heading to Lima it’s wise to organise a hotel before you touch down. For stays at the edge of the Pacific, look for hotels in Miraflores and Barranco, or turn your attentions slightly inland to upmarket San Isidro. To be at the heart of historic Lima, hotels around the central square of Plaza Mayor are a terrific investment.
A former capital of the Inca Empire, Cusco is a beautiful gateway to the Inca Trail and its treasures. It’s also one of the most expensive destinations outside of Lima, especially in peak travel time between June and August, so book early to snap up a hotel bargain.
Elsewhere, in destinations such as colonial Arequipa, Amazonian Iquitos, cultural Trujillo, and Puno, which offers access to Lake Titicaca, hotels to suit all styles and budgets can be booked. May to October is the most popular time to visit Peru (for dry and bright weather conditions), so book flights and hotels well in advance to secure the cheapest rates if you are travelling at this time.
