For many, flying to Peru is the beginning of an adventure to Macchu Picchu, and with non-stop flights on offer, the journey should get you off to a flying start.

British Airways offers a service from London Gatwick to Lima (LIM) taking around 12-and-a-half hours. All other flight options require connections either in Europe or the Americas.

Iberia flies via Madrid from London and Manchester, KLM offers services from all over the UK via Amsterdam and Columbian airline Avianca flies from Heathrow via Bogota. Alternatively, fly via the USA with Delta via Atlanta or American Airlines via Dallas.

Other airports in Peru – Cusco (CUZ), Iquitos (IQT), Piura (PIU) and Arequipa (AQP) – can be reached via connections through Lima with South America specialist LAN, Avianca or Peruvian Airlines.

You are more than likely to land at Jorge Chavez International Airport (LIM), just a few kilometres from central Lima. Transportation options include airport shuttles buses and taxis. Expect to pay upwards of 60 soles (£12) for a taxi to Miraflores – Lima’s tourism darling by the beach.

At Peru’s other major airports, such as Cusco’s Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport (CUZ), similar transportation options are available.

Though driving in Lima can be quite the challenge, hiring a car in Peru gives you the ultimate freedom to travel. Pre-book car hire and arrange to collect upon arrival or from a downtown location.

It’s one of the biggest cities in South America, so if you’re heading to Lima it’s wise to organise a hotel before you touch down. For stays at the edge of the Pacific, look for hotels in Miraflores and Barranco, or turn your attentions slightly inland to upmarket San Isidro.
