For most people, holidays in Havana conjure up iconic images of cigars, vintage cars, smooth music, sultry dancers and pastel colonial-style palaces of colonialism. And the good news is that the reality of the Cuban capital does not disappoint. This sexy destination oozes style and charisma. Oh, and plenty of opportunities to down a shot of rum.
The buzzing metropolis that is Havana has been capturing the imagination of travellers for decades - with most people thinking of it as a fascinating city destination...
The truth, however, is that there are miles and miles of typically Caribbean palm-tree-dotted beaches lining the northern shores of Cuba, such as those in lovely Playas del Este. The glamorous city of Havana, with its white sand beaches, cosy, welcoming bars, and truly exceptional hotels, can therefore provide both seaside relaxation and culture, all in the same package. Not something you can say about many capitals.
In fact, there is so much to see here that, once you've touched down in this vibrant destination and unpacked your best holiday threads at your hotel, it is a good idea to take a tour of Havana to get your bearings. It's a big place, but you'll soon get a feel for it. And the best way to navigate the streets is undoubtedly in an American classic car, such as the Buicks and Pontiacs you see on the city streets, however, car hire is available.
Tours in these comfortable automobiles are widely available. But if you prefer to orientate yourself without the vintage glamour, simply stroll along the four miles of city coastline known as the Malecon, or Avenida de Maceo. However you get around, you'll also want to visit Old Havana (Habana Vieja), which houses some of the most interesting, and most photographed, historical buildings in the capital, and more modern Centro Habana, which includes Chinatown and has plenty of shops, bars, and restaurants catering for tourists. At night, meanwhile, the Vedado or Miramar districts are the places to be.
