A large proportion of the Dominican Republic’s tourists arrive into Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ). And if you’ve booked a package holiday to the Dominican Republic, your transfers will be included in the total price of your trip, so all you have to do is look out for your rep on arrival and make a beeline for your tour bus.
If you’ve decided to ditch the package holiday and set off on a DIY adventure, however, you’ll need to take a shared shuttle bus or taxi. Luckily, airport transfers in the Dominican Republic are a doddle, guaranteeing that your trip gets off to a smooth start.
Shared shuttle buses can be booked online in advance, while there are fixed prices for taxis to pretty much every destination in the Dominican Republic from the major airports, so you won’t be forced into haggling after your long-haul flight.
It’s worth being wary of the dozens of freelance airport porters flocking to help with your luggage, though. You’ll need to say a firm ‘No gracias’ or be prepared to part with a US$2 tip.
If you’re after a truly local adventure, try getting around the Dominican Republic by guagua. These buses rattle around on their own timetables and generally turn getting from A to B into something far more interesting.
You’ll need fairly good Spanish to understand what the heck is going on, so if you’re limited to ‘Hola’, try taking buses run by Caribe Tours or Metro buses instead. These companies are considerably more organised and operate with fixed prices, making them far easier to negotiate.
If you’re looking to travel like a local on the Dominican Republic, trying flagging down a motoconcho (motorbike taxi) to zip through the streets with the Caribbean breeze in your hair. It’s by far the most fun way of getting around the Dominican Republic and you’re bound to meet some colourful characters along the way.
Best for short hops between resorts and beaches, motoconchos add a whole new layer of excitement to any day trip, with natural air-conditioning all the way.
