Edinburgh Airport (EDI) sits around 13 kilometres (8 miles) west of the centre and there are all kinds of ways to get from it to the heart of the city. Airlink 100 runs an airport bus every 10 minutes on a 24-hour basis, providing effortless transfers to Edinburgh city centre.
The bus drops off passengers at Waverley Bridge, smack bang between the Old Centre and the New Town and a single journey will set you back just £4.50. If you’re on a budget, it’s a no-brainer.
If you’re looking for transport with a little more local character, jump aboard the Edinburgh tram. Running every 8 to 12 minutes, the tram zips from the airport all the way to York Place, stopping at several strategic points in the city along the way, including Murrayfield Stadium, Haymarket and Princes Street.
The journey takes roughly 35 minutes end to end and, at just £5.50 per trip, it’s a steal. If you’re staying in Edinburgh’s New Town it makes excellent sense.
If you’re not in the mood to wait around, head outside the terminal and hop into a taxi. The trip into central Edinburgh will take just 25 minutes and cost anything from £25, so be sure to keep some cash handy. It might not be cheap, but if you’re after door-to-door service, it’s the speediest option.
Even better, skip the snaking queues and avoid on-the-spot premium rates by booking a private airport transfer into Edinburgh in advance. Saving both time and money, it’s a satisfyingly smug way to arrive in the city.
Once you’ve dropped your bags and gathered your bearings, there are lots of ways to get around Edinburgh. If you’re reasonably fit, the best way to explore Edinburgh is on foot.
It’s an easy city to navigate as a pedestrian. The hills will put your calf muscles to the test, though, so you’ll deserve that hearty meal at the end of the day.
