Any night out in Sorrento should involve a table, good company and mesmerising views over the bay. Plenty of bars offer this formula, but there’s one true classic...
Popular since the 19th century, Circolo dei Forestieri (Via Luigi de Maio 35) now houses the town’s friendly tourist office. But go through to the back, up some stairs and you’ll stumble upon the same rooftop veranda that has silenced Sorrento’s visitors for decades. Order a Kir Royale, sigh deeply and soak up the atmosphere.
The nightlife in Sorrento is otherwise chiefly concentrated around its hub, Piazza Tasso, where terracotta tile roofs cascade down towards red awnings and everyone seems to congregate come evening.
Plenty of the establishments on this square look alluring, but savvy Sorrentino locals favour Il Fauno (Piazza Tasso 13-15). If the blue and green tiles lend something of a swimming pool vibe, the liberal glasses of spumante (sparkling wine), fruit cocktails and finocchietto (a characterful local drink made using wild fennel) positively scream ‘holiday’.
Limoncello goes hand-in-hand with entertainment in Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast. Grown on aromatic terraces, the area’s particularly sweet lemons are what provide the distinctive taste.
Every bar in Sorrento will serve limoncello, but go to the Tiffany Club (Via Sant’Antonino 6) for the best vintages.
Ice cream is also eaten late here. Primavera (Corso Italia 142) is the best gelateria, and a regular pit stop during Sorrento nights out before closing at midnight. The refreshing crema di limone flavour is recommended, for obvious reasons (see above), but aubergine parmigiana is more of an acquired (or never acquired) taste.
Sorrento nightlife features only one genuine club: Fauno Notte Club (Piazza Tasso 13). The entrance fee is steep, but the club stays open until 3am.
To see another side to entertainment in Sorrento, check out the fun-filled folk dance revues at Teatro Tasso (Piazza Sant'Antonino) and the live music at Circolo dei Forestieri.
