Clubs are low-lit, late-night bars with dance floors and DJs spinning good-time tunes. Always pushing to be bigger and better, Cancun brings a whole new meaning to the concept of the ‘nightclub’.
The traditional ingredients remain, but they definitely play second fiddle to the acrobats, A-list celebrity appearances, gigantic movie screens and rock bands.
Coco Bongo, Dady’O, and The City are among the most famous of these mega-clubs, all dotted around the neon Hotel Zone. Cover charges can be stratospheric, but you’ll be too mind-blown to care.
If your budget doesn’t stretch to the dizzy heights of Coco Bongo, stick to Cancun’s bars instead. If you’re young, wild and ready to get reckless, you’ll be right at home. Think tequila shots chased by more tequila shots, yards of margaritas, jugs of beer and bar staff on a mission to get you messy.
Señor Frogs, Hooters and Carlos N Charlie’s are among the most popular, with bikini contests, wet T-shirt competitions and dance-offs.
There’s a Spring Break vibe to the bar scene here all year round, while Spring Break proper is pure un-chaperoned chaos. What it lacks in class it makes up for in fun, so saddle up for a wild ride.
If the thought of marauding Spring Breakers sends shivers down your spine, swerve the bars and slip into one of Cancun’s swanky lounges.
Fitting snugly between a bar and a club, a lounge is somewhere to sip cocktails in hipster style to the tune of laid-back Ibiza-esque beats. It’s all the glitz without the gimmicks.
Door fees can be crippling, but they often cover your alcohol all night long. If the entrance fee is negligible, expect to pay premium bar prices instead.
To get started, try Nectar Bar in the Hotel Zone, a sophisticated spot overlooking Nichupte Lagoon, or Thai Lounge (Blvd. Kukulcán Km. 12.5), a hip hangout buried within botanical gardens.
