Transfers to Faro are easy to find, with good coach services, taxis and car hire at the airport to ferry you along the 4-kilometre (2.5-mile) stretch into town. The taxi rank is next to the arrivals lounge, and a four-seater car to the centre of Faro will cost around €13 (20% more after 10pm and on weekends). You’ll also have to pay an extra €2 for each luggage item.
The Próximo buses 14 and 16 offer transfers to Faro every half an hour between 5am and 11.15pm, dropping you off at Faro’s main EVA bus terminal. The trip takes 20 minutes and costs €2.20, with a less-frequent service outside of the peak June to August holiday months.
Car hire is also available at Faro Airport (FAO).
Faro is a modestly sized city and most of its sights can be seen on foot. However, if you’d rather not hoof it, there are lots of other options for getting around Faro and its surrounds.
Hire a bike from responsible tourism operator Formosamar, which rents adults’ and children’s models, and enjoy riding around the city or the serene pathways of the Ria Formosa nature reserve. It’s worth noting that it’s free to take bicycles on trains, giving you the option to explore not just Faro itself, but also a little further afield.
Trains from Faro station run from Vila Real de San Antonio in the east to Lagos in the west, taking in a number of towns along the way. And if you’re planning to discover the secluded paradise of Ilha da Barreta, you can catch a ferry from the marina, outside the Cicade Velha (Old Town) walls. Animaris runs four services a day and you can buy a return ticket for €10 from its kiosk near the departure point.
Alternatively, hail a cab: the most convenient way of getting around in Faro. These can either be booked by phone (try Algarserra Transfers on +351 289 804 017 or Sunline transfers +351 935 858 997) or picked up from outside Faro train station on the western side of town.
