The region’s best-known nightlife hotspot has to be Albufeira.
This lively town’s famous ‘Strip’ is packed with bars and clubs, including Brit favourites Matt’s Bar, which hosts pre-parties for the popular Kiss Club. Think neon lights, foam parties, fancy dress, cheap drinks and a young, good-looking crowd living it up until dawn.
That’s not to say that the resort doesn’t have its classy side. Pricier venues such as Capitulo V, overlooking Praia da Oura, and Libertos are jet-set favourites and count footballer Cristiano Ronaldo among their regulars.
Lagos has a similarly happening after-hours scene, with plenty of venues aimed at a more mature crowd as well as many that cater for the 18-30s set.
Stevie Ray’s Blues Jazz Bar is a relaxed live-music venue with a cool clientele, while marina views make Amuras Bar a top pick for post-dinner cocktails.
Surfers and backpackers tend to head to Eddie’s Bar or The Red Eye Bar.
If it’s pure cheese and a zingy atmosphere you’re after, though, then try Insideout – famed for its fishbowl cocktails – or Three Monkeys.
Keen for something a little less Brit-centric?
Quinta do Lago and Vilamoura both boast small but decidedly upmarket nightlife scenes, with cocktail joints and glitzy restaurants the order of the day.
Affluent Carvoeiro is fab for lounge bars while Luz has a laid-back after-hours vibe centred on the town’s surf culture.
Praia da Rocha, on the other hand, is as lively as they come, with some legendary bars, clubs and live-music venues.
