Loulé Carnival; February/March: Portugal’s oldest continuous event has been running for more than 100 years and it’s the biggest carnival in the Algarve. Expect parades, music and dancing across the three days running up to Shrove Tuesday.
FIESA International Sand Sculpture Festival; March-October: Pêra plays host to this sand-tastic event, which marries art with the Algarve’s greatest natural asset. Sculptors from around the world magic three-dimensional creations out of 35,000 tons of sand. The result has to be seen to be believed.
Med Festival; June: Loulé’s all-encompassing celebration of Mediterranean culture takes in everything from theatre and music to food, craftwork and art.
Portugal Masters; September/October: This all-star tournament is a major highlight of the golfing calendar. Players from around the world jet in to compete on Vilamoura’s impeccably groomed 18-hole golf course.
