Málaga Airport is served by the zippy, clean and well-run cercanías (commuter) train. The C1 line runs from the airport out to the larger resort areas of Torremolinos, Benalmádena and Fuengirola.
Alternatively, for a fast door-to-door service, taxis are in plentiful supply at the airport.
If you’ve come to Costa del Sol on a package holiday, an airport transfer will probably be included.
The C1 train line will transport you along the coast from Málaga as far south as Fuengirola.
If there is somewhere else you need to get to, buses will take you to the places the train won’t. The majority of the region’s buses come and go via Málaga’s main bus station, which is right next to María Zambrano train station.
Within Málaga itself, there is a brand new metro network, though this doesn’t go further than the city limits.
Riding buses around the Costa del Sol is cheap, sure, but it’s not necessarily efficient. If you need to get somewhere in a hurry, take a taxi instead.
There are taxis galore in the main resorts and urban areas, and they’re easily identified by their all-white colour. A green light indicates they are empty and a meter dictates the price.
It’s worth noting that, despite the fact most of the people here are on holidays, there is still a ‘rush hour’ of sorts in late afternoon when sunbathers leave the beach en masse. During this time, taxis are a little harder to come by.
Arguably the swiftest – though perhaps not the safest – option for zipping around the Costa del Sol is to hire a motor scooter.
You’ll need a driver’s license and you’ll have to wear a helmet (it’s the law, and just plain sensible).
If you do rent a scooter, be vigilant about the rules of the road. In an effort to curb high accident rates, local police are cracking down on rule breakers and will hand out on-the-spot fines if they spot you doing an ill-advised manoeuvre.
Cheap, easy, independent… hiring a car here is worth a look. Find out more about your options on our Costa del Sol car hire page.
