Nightlife in Thailand’s raucous capital tends to swing between two extremes: sophisticated upmarket venues, and the cheap backpacker bars of Khao San Road.
Those with cash to flash should head to the glamorous Sky Bar (1,055/42 Silom Road), one of the highest rooftop bars in the world. Sip a cocktail as you take in the vertigo-inducing views across Bangkok.
Back on ground level, feel in the know at Maggie Choo's (320 Silom Road), a hidden bar in the style of a 1930s Chinese opium den. The speakeasy vibes and velvet seats make it perfect for a romantic tête-à-tête.
For an elegant night out in Thailand that’s easier on the wallet, hop over to Thonglor, also known as Sukhumvit Soi 55, for hip restaurants and bars such as the industrial-chic House 10 (Thonglor Soi 8). Alternatively, in Ekkamai, Dark Bar (Ekamai Soi 10), runs fun club nights and serves a mean whisky sour.
Koh Pha Ngan is legendary for nightlife in Thailand. It’s best known for its full moon parties, with the promise of thumping beats, all-night parties and gorgeous scenery drawing thousands of young revellers each month. There’s nothing else in Thailand quite like it.
If your tastes veer towards a mellower vibe, make for Thailand’s quieter islands, which include Koh Bulon Lae and Koh Lanta. Popular spots such as Phuket, Koh Phi Phi and Koh Samui are livelier, and offer everything from swanky bars to cabaret shows.
Muay Thai (Thai boxing) is another source of entertainment in Thailand. Popular everywhere, it’s worth going to at least one match (unless you’re opposed to the idea, of course), if only for the high-adrenalin atmosphere.
Get ringside seats at Chiang Mai’s Loi Kroh boxing stadium (96-98 Loi Kroh Road Soi 3) or get in the ring yourself – Tiger Muay Thai (7/35 Moo 5, Soi Ta-iad, Ao Chalong) on Phuket, is one of the biggest boxing camps in Thailand.
