With sizzling temperatures, beautiful beaches and plenty to do, Altinkum is a superb resort for an escape. Especially popular with families, it effortlessly manages to blend the familiar – there’s a strong British influence here – with Turkish culture.
Situated in western Turkey and overlooking the Aegean Sea, Altinkum offers plenty of opportunities to spend long, lazy sun-drenched days by the coast. Choose from the easy-to-remember Main (or First) Beach, Second Beach and, the quietest, Third Beach.
But, there’s more to an Altinkum holiday than lapping up the Turkish sun. Learn to dive in crystal-clear water, ride through the countryside in a jeep or make a splash at the water park. You won’t ever be short on things to do.
Altinkum is also a fantastic starting point for historic excursions. There’s the Temple of Apollo in Didim, the ruins of ancient Greek city, Ephesus (which you can reach on your own via public transport), and Dalyan’s Turtle Beach, about three hours’ drive away.
Like shopping? Head to the seafront for souvenirs and sweet treats. For more original gifts, make a beeline for the shopping centre on Atatürk Boulevard, where you’ll find locally embroidered towels and tablecloths among other handmade gifts. In October, the International Didim Olive Festival kicks off and is a great opportunity to buy delicious oils for less.
Beyond the sun, it’s the nightlife that brings so many holidaymakers to Altinkum – and Dolphin Square is the beating heart of it all with a diverse mix of late-night restaurants, wine bars and English-style pubs. Not only is it affordable, kids are also welcome pretty much everywhere. Meanwhile, couples and groups will love the open-air club Medusa, where live DJs party on well past bedtime.
*ATOL (Air Travel Organiser's Licence) is a financial protection scheme for package holidays: It provides support to consumers in the event their holiday provider collapses. Booking with an ATOL holder ensures that you won't be left out of pocket and you won't be left stranded abroad. All package holidays compared using TravelSupermarket are protected by ATOL.
ABTA (Association of British Travel Agents) offers similar cover for packages booked with its members. However, while ATOL predominantly covers flight-based packages, ABTA covers non-flight based holidays (such as rail and cruise) and linked travel arrangements. If you are unsure whether or not your trip is covered by ABTA, check with your provider.
