A city famed for its 23 miles of beautiful white sands and supercharged motor sports, Daytona Beach is more sun, sea and speed than your average beach break. But look beyond this, and you’ll also discover a decent sprinkling of art, culture and entertainment.
Split between the oceanfront spit and the mainland by the Halifax River, Daytona Beach is a beach town for throttle jockeys. It’s been a racing mecca since 1936, when it held its first stock car race, so if you like the thrill of all things fast to complement those lazy days by the sea, this is the place for you. Calendar highlights include February’s Speedweeks – culminating in the Daytona 500 – March’s Bike Week, July’s Coke Zero Sugar 400 and October’s Biketoberfest.
Motorsport aside, in recent years Daytona Beach has expanded its art and culture scene. The Halifax Historical Museum highlights the history of the area and its people, the Southeast Museum of Photography features work from both local and international artists, and the Cici and Hyatt Brown Museum of Art, designed to look like a rural Floridian house, has the largest collection of Florida art in the world.
*ATOL (Air Travel Organiser's Licence) is a financial protection scheme for package holidays: It provides support to consumers in the event their holiday provider collapses. Booking with an ATOL holder ensures that you won't be left out of pocket and you won't be left stranded abroad. All package holidays compared using TravelSupermarket are protected by ATOL.
ABTA (Association of British Travel Agents) offers similar cover for packages booked with its members. However, while ATOL predominantly covers flight-based packages, ABTA covers non-flight based holidays (such as rail and cruise) and linked travel arrangements. If you are unsure whether or not your trip is covered by ABTA, check with your provider.
