Wedged between Great Salt Lake and the snow-capped Wasatch Mountains, Salt Lake City is a true beauty of the American west. The lake, which measures around 1,500 square miles, is home to millions of native birds and you can float on the water thanks to the high density of minerals.
Mormons founded the city in 1847 and their church – The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints – still plays an important role here. Many of the city's finest attractions are a part of Mormon heritage, including the 10-acre Temple Square, which features the impressive Salt Lake Temple and the Striking Salt Lake Tabernacle.
Other attractions in Salt Lake City, also known simply as Salt Lake, include the Utah Museum of Fine Arts, Utah State Capitol, Clark Planetarium, and the Marmalade Hill Historic District, which features an impressive array of early architecture. Beehive House is also worth a visit. It was one of two homes owned by the Mormon Brigham Young, who founded the city, and you can tour the place to see what life was like in the 1850s.
You can also step back in time to see how the west once was at This is the Place Heritage Park. Pan for gold or help with the harvest as you discover times gone by.
Nature lovers should take a trip to Antelope Island State Park, an island in Great Salt Lake. If you don't think that sounds very impressive, know that the island is large enough for 500 bison to roam free. There are excellent hiking and biking trails here, plus the opportunity to ride horses and truly absorb the western life that was.
Salt Lake City offers plenty of hiking, biking and other sports activities at various places around the area. You can even break up your walk by swinging a golf club, if golf gets your pulse racing.
