A trip across the USA is a state-to-state gastronomic voyage into America’s diverse regional cuisine.
With such a huge coastline, it's no surprise the USA lands some excellent seafood. The New England coast swarms with huge lobsters, clams and oysters often served up in steaming bowls of chowder.
Further south, Maryland and the Chesapeake Bay yield the delicious Blue Crab, which is at its tastiest when made into crab cakes.
Even further south, Creole influence makes itself known in the spicy shrimp and crawfish dishes of Louisiana.
Another southern specialty, regarded with almost religious reverence, is barbecue. Proper barbecue is heavenly. The practice of smoking meat over an open fire is elevated to an art form in Tennessee, Texas, Georgia and Missouri, but you'll find BBQ hotspots across the USA.
If you like Mexican-influenced food, Texas is also the place to head for authentic Tex-Mex cuisine. Fiery fajitas and enchiladas are the way forward here, served with grilled onions, sour cream and grated cheese.
To round off a tour of American food, make the last stop Florida, where dessert comes with a zing. Key Lime Pie was invented here and is still the place to find the ultimate in gooey, citrusy pudding.
You can’t say you’ve sampled US cuisine if you haven’t had a hot dog. Get one from a street vendor and devour on the spot. Better still, catch a baseball game, lather on the mustard and pretend you understand the rules.
While you’ll find hot dogs everywhere, there’s only one Philly cheese steak. If you’re in the historic city of Philadelphia, don’t pass up the opportunity to have this famous snack. It’s beef, chopped while being grilled in cheese, which is then added to a bun with even more cheese. It’s beefy, cheesy and utterly delicious.
Stay with the beef and explore that great gift to the world, the hamburger. They’re ubiquitous but, for the real deal, select an old-school diner where the burgers are handmade; eat at the counter and chew your way into the American Dream.
