From boutique spa hotels overlooking the Adriatic to historic inns that come alive by candlelight, the hotels in Hvar are often as mesmerising as the island itself.

Many visitors choose to stay close to historic Hvar Town, which is surrounded by 13th-century walls and pine-scented greenery. This is the heart of the island, where terracotta roofs climb the hills, ancient bells chime, superyachts bob on the seafront and visitors clamber for the best views across the sparkling water.

Descriptions of many hotels in Hvar Town, especially in the historic centre and around the harbour, contain the word “renovated”, a “renovated palazzo”, a “renovated neo-classical villa”, and so on.

Fortunately they’ve usually been upgraded very well, stylishly mixing the old with the new, so you get to wander off into dreams of the past while luxuriating in a swanky, design-led suite, perhaps with a balcony on which to drink in that sea view. Talking of drinks, you’ll often find a bar next to the swimming pool on the roof.

For sprawling grounds and a swim at ground level, look to the edges of the town centre, where there are plenty of four and five-star hotels offering luxurious suites, spas and great restaurants.

The best hotels in Hvar Town can be expensive compared to elsewhere in Croatia, so it’s wise to compare prices on TravelSupermarket and book well in advance.
