Holiday cottages in Lake District

Home to lovely lakes, impressive mountains and inspiring dales, the Lake District is one of England’s most scenic regions. It’s also one of the most loved, with more than 15 million holidaymakers visiting annually. Discover it for yourself with a cottage holiday in 2020.

As far as picturesque staycations go, the Lake District takes some beating. Set in the county of Cumbria, England’s largest national park is the very epitome of the classic British countryside. A sprawling landscape of tumbling fells and placid lakes, you can expect pretty scenes aplenty during your cottage break.

But the Lake District is more than just the sum of its breathtaking beauty. A large part of its appeal comes down to the sheer variety of things to do here. Keen for an active and outdoorsy break? Hike up Scafell Pike, England’s highest peak, or kayak on Windermere lake. Looking to explore the region’s rich literary history? Head to Grasmere for Wordsworth and Coniston for Ruskin. Prefer peace and quiet? Make a beeline for Ennerdale or Boot.

Other popular locations include towns such as Keswick, Kendal and Hawkshead or appealing lakeside destinations such as Buttermere, Thirlmere or Ullswater. Although you can rest assured you’ll always be within walking distance of a good pub, these locations tend to be a bit pricier due to their premium locations.

So, if you’re looking for cheaper alternatives and happy to travel then consider booking a cottage outside of the boundaries of the national park. Obvious places include Penrith, where you’ll find King Arthur's Round Table. Meanwhile, Cockermouth, officially one of the UK’s 51 ‘Gem Towns’, and Ulverston, birthplace of Stan Laurel of Laurel and Hardy fame, also offer good accommodation options.

For a complete change of scenery there’s always the nearby west Cumbrian coastline to escape to for a cottage holiday. Take your pick from towns like Seascale, Whitehaven and Ravenglass.

Remember, holiday cottages come in all shapes and sizes, so do your research before you book – they don’t all have a hot tub and log fire as standard!
