Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport (SYD) is Australia’s busiest airport, handling over 36 million passengers a year. The country’s national airline, Qantas, has its home base here and it is a secondary hub for Virgin Australia and Jetstar Airways.

Australia is stringent about what you can and can’t bring into the country. To protect its delicate ecosystem, plants, fruit and sometimes even the mud on your shoes is forbidden, so be sure to check the complete list of items that you must declare upon arrival.
At present, direct flights to Sydney from the UK are not available; passengers must stop off in Asia or the Middle East. With almost 10,000 miles separating the UK from Australia, most current models of aircraft need to refuel for such long distances.
However, the new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner is capable of making the trip to in one flight, with Qantas beginning services to Perth in 2018 – so it may not be long until direct flights to Sydney are available too.
For UK citizens, applying for a visa can be done quickly, easily and at no cost via the Department of Immigration and Border Protection website. All you need is the electronic visa, known as an eVisitor visa, and a valid passport with six months remaining on it, before you can fly to Sydney.
