Boston is a major city on the north-eastern US coast and the capital of the state of Massachusetts. It played a central role in the American Revolution and was the location for the famed sitcom 'Cheers'.
The city offers any visitor a rich mix of history and tradition with modern architecture and culture...
Book your seats on cheap flights to Boston to discover this excellent city break destination. Compact, it is easily navigable and has a skyline characterised by several skyscrapers, including Prudential Tower. The Tower's Prudential Skywalk is the highest observation deck in New England. Boston is also a fantastic base for a wider tour of New England that could take in such places as the nearby city of Cambridge, site of both Harvard University and MIT.
As one of the USA's older cities there are many historic places to visit in Boston, such as Faneuil Hall. One of America's most visited tourist destinations; it is one of 16 stops on the Freedom Trail, the red-brick road and walking tour that winds through Downtown Boston.
The city is also famous as the location of the Boston Tea Party in 1773, an iconic event in US history and in the eventual War of Independence against British colonial rule.
Moreover, as a culturally rich centre, Boston has a number of museums. The Museum of Fine Arts is one of the largest museums in the United States, containing more than 450,000 works of art. The John F Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum, the Museum of Science and the New England Aquarium are other top attractions in the city.
For other activities, visitors can take boat tours on the Charles River, which runs through the city. There are also ferries to Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area. The area, which includes the Boston Harbor Islands State Park, is found in the islands in Boston Harbor. There are numerous hiking trails, beaches and the oldest lighthouse in the US, Boston Light.
When it comes to entertainment, Boston is brimming with things to do. Any visitor with a love of retail should be sure to explore the pedestrianised Downtown Crossing, one of Boston's oldest shopping districts. Sports fans should take the chance to see the Red Sox, Boston's famous Major League baseball team which is based at the equally iconic Fenway Park near Kenmore Square.
When it comes to food and drink, Boston's strong historical connection with Ireland is reflected in the city's many Irish bars. The city is also famous for its seafood restaurants and dishes. Boston clam chowder, otherwise known as New England clam chowder, is one of the area's signature dishes. A milk- or cream-based broth, it contains potatoes, onions and, of course, local clams.
With so much on offer, Boston is a fascinating city and one well worth exploring.
