Shannon is the unofficial name for a region in the mid-west of the Republic of Ireland. It encompasses parts of the county of Clare and the northern areas of the counties of Kerry and Tipperary. Find flights to Shannon with TravelSupermarket to see this glorious corner of the Emerald Isle.
Its largest and best-known city is Limerick, which is the commercial and social hub for Shannon as a whole...
The whole region is named after the River Shannon, which winds its way through a large part of it. Cheap flights to Shannon airport (SNN) are a great way to begin your exploration of this region.
There are many tourist attractions throughout Shannon, including the Cliffs of Moher and Bunratty Castle. The Cliffs of Moher rise to a height of 214 metres above the sea and, on clear days, offer remarkable views across to Galway Bay. They are also home to a wide variety of seabirds, which will be of interest to nature lovers. Bunratty Castle dates to the year 914 and visitors can explore its well-preserved interiors and delightful adjacent parkland.
There is not necessarily a best time to visit Shannon as the region has something to offer at all times of the year. During the colder and wetter winter months there are many indoor activities to keep visitors occupied, such as exploring ancient castles or enjoying a refreshing pint in a cosy pub. In the summer, although it's not very warm, you can explore the ruggedly beautiful landscape and even walk alongside the River Shannon itself.
