Taking a taxi or hiring a car are your only real options on arrival at Waterford Airport.

Many tourists book car hire in Waterford. It’s good value, driving is easy, and there is a wealth of things to see and do that make car hire worthwhile. You can compare prices on renting a car using our search tool.

Taxis are usually waiting at the airport taxi rank (just outside the terminal building). If there aren’t any there’s a telephone by the customer service desk which you can use for free to order a cab. It takes around 15 minutes to get into Waterford from the airport.

While there are no direct bus or train services from the airport, visitors can take a taxi into Waterford to reach the city’s bus station, on City Quayside, or the railway hub, which is called Plunkett Station. Buses and trains from these stations connect Waterford with many of Ireland’s top destinations.

The city of Waterford is a lovely mixture of medieval areas and alleyways and modern squares. It's a good place to look for hotels if you'd like a holiday surrounded by lovely scenery and historical landmarks but also want the conveniences of a city break. It's great for hearty traditional and modern Irish food, with some of the best restaurants in the country.

There's lots of nightlife with a good selection of bars and pubs and plenty of music to be had. The theatre and arts festivals offer a cultural experience, too. While you're in Waterford visit Waterford Crystal. Founded in 1783 it's still producing much admired crystal that's exported worldwide.

Nearby places that combine plenty of daytime activities with good dining and nightlife include Tramore and Lismore. Both also contain some fascinating historical landmarks.

Or visit nearby Dunmore East for a quieter, more peaceful stay on the seafront. Less bustling than the city, it still has plenty of activities and is particularly well known for boating and sailing. You can find some lovely traditional hotels here.

For a beach break the Ardmore Beaches provide some beautiful blue flag sandy beaches, with opportunities for diving, sailing, kayaking and snorkelling. Golfers might enjoy staying near here too, with three lovely nearby golf courses. Walkers who enjoy the fabulous scenery of the beaches, hills and cliffs would also enjoy staying in the beautiful Nire valley, nestled among the Comeragh mountains with the river Nire running through it. There's an annual walking festival in October for the moderately to very fit. Fishing enthusiasts will enjoy staying near Blackwater, known for its superior salmon fishing.
