From the minute you touch down at Fuerteventura Airport, the warmth envelopes you and helps you to relax into the laidback atmosphere...
If you want to see as much of the island as possible, car hire in Fuerteventura is a good choice and easily organised at the airport. It will allow you to take in all that the island has to offer at your own pace.
Wherever you choose to stay, there is likely to be a fabulous beach nearby. You will find either moon-shaped bays with golden sand or long stretches of black shingle coastline. There are plenty of resorts to choose from, including Corralejo, Costa de Antigua and Tarajalejo, where a variety of hotels sit right on the shoreline. Your choice of resort depends on the kind of break you want. For example, Costa Caleta offers a purpose-built holiday resort with activities such as golf, shopping and water sports right on your doorstep.
If you prefer something a bit more peaceful try El Cotillo, where the resort is built around the original fishing village and is slightly quieter. Jandia is home to Mount Jandia, the highest point of the island and you will find a number of hotels at the foot of the mountain offering lots of green space and fantastic hiking opportunities.
Whatever time you visit and wherever you decide to stay, Fuerteventura really does have something for everyone and shouldn't be overlooked as a holiday destination
One of the best ways to see the island is to make the most of your hire car and spend the day visiting the interesting towns and villages, scattered over the unique stony landscape...
Alternatively, take a guided tour excursion where you can visit local farms and sample goats' cheese or learn all about the old capital, Betancuria. Walking and hiking are popular and can be a great way to see stunning views from mountain trails and paths. An afternoon cruise around the island's shoreline will give you the chance to see whales, dolphins or turtles.
If the beach is your main focus then head to Costa Calima, where the hotels sit right on the beach front, or Corralejo in the north of the island, where remote bays offer great conditions for windsurfing and you'll also find shops and markets to explore.
The beach resorts have lots of sporting activities to keep you busy during your stay, allowing you to try your hand at windsurfing, diving, dune jumping and kite surfing, among others. In July each year the island plays host to the PWA World Windsurfing event at Sotavento, so hotels in the area can get booked up fast.
There are other events throughout the year that are worth a visit too, including Carnival, which is held during February and March. There is a different theme each year, but the floats, parades and street celebrations are definitely a sight to behold. Fuerteventura also holds a number of music festivals throughout the year celebrating all kinds of live music in the many auditoriums and venues around the island.
