It’s easy and straightforward to pick up a rental car from Rhodes International Airport (RHO) where most UK flights land. The airport is located 14km (9 miles), or a 20-minute journey, into the city of Rhodes, which is also known as Rodos. In the arrivals hall, international car hire companies such as Avis, Budget, Hertz and Sixt are present, while Europcar operates from a building just across the road from the airport terminal.

Driving in Rhodes is a treat: the island’s small size means nothing is too far away, while the scenic routes and picturesque views flashing past the window are a delight in themselves.

Hire a car to savour a taste of the ‘true’ Rhodes, particularly the west of the island. The beautiful Filerimos Hills on the north-west side of the island are a delight, while the Monastery of Filerimos, thought to have been built by the Knights of St John, is an important archaeological site. Faliraki is the liveliest and most crowded beach resort, with a small section reserved for nudists, while windy Prasonisi on the southern tip is ideal for windsurfing and kite surfing. Two further options are Fournou, which is a great secluded spot for relaxing and working on your tan, and Katsouni beach, which offers shallow water that’s perfect for novice swimmers. You must be at least 21 years old to hire a car in Rhodes, where you drive on the right and overtake on the left. Seatbelts must be worn (by both front and back seat passengers) at all times, and the top speed limit is 80km/h (50mph)

1. It’s not uncommon to see goats feeding next to – or even on – the road when driving around in Rhodes. Pay attention at all times, as they’ve been known to stroll around even very busy highways.

2. Due to Rhodes’ narrow roads, you’ll often see pedestrians walking on the street due to the lack of pavements, so take care when driving round corners or late at night.

3. Finding a parking place can often be a challenge in Rhodes’ busiest spots, especially during the height of summer. Keep your eyes peeled for blue road signs with white "P"s on them, and don’t forget to buy a ticket from the nearest automated machine once you’ve parked up.
