Hiring a car is a popular choice in Madeira: the well-connected road network and scenic drives mean it’s a great idea to rent a car and go exploring.
The small size of the island means it doesn’t usually take too long to get anywhere, either, so there’s less time spent behind the wheel, and more spent enjoying everything that Madeira has to offer.
Language: Portuguese | Currency: Euros (€) | Avg. Flight time: 4 hours
It’s easiest to pick up your car from Madeira airport – recently renamed the Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport (FNC), in honour of the footballer, who was born on the island – where you’ll find a wide selection of well-known car hire companies including Hertz, Budget, Avis, Sixt and Europcar, as well as a range of local companies.
All rental desks are located before the security area on floor 0 of the arrivals hall.
Rental desks at Madeira airport include:
From the airport, it’s a 20-minute drive into Funchal. To Madalena do Mar, it’s a 40-minute drive.
The coastal road, ER101, circumnavigates Madeira and offers spectacular views and steep climbs with narrow sections that hug the cliffs of the coastline. During the rainy season, waterfalls cascade down rock faces along the roadside and rain down on the cars travelling below, and there are also sections where high waves may spray passing cars, so take extra care!
To make the road safer, the authority has made part of the road between São Vicente and Porto Moniz one-way (east to west). Besides the steep climbs and sharp turns, you also need to be aware of falling rocks while driving on ER101 – the best advice here is to get full insurance cover when hiring a car.
Porto Moniz is a gem of a village in the north-west corner of the island. It takes about an hour to drive there from Funchal, but once you’ve experienced the natural saltwater pools filled with clear sea water formed from volcanic rock, it’ll be obvious that the trip was more than worth it.
Another hidden gem is Calheta, on Madeira’s south-west coast, about half an hour’s drive from Funchal. The man-made beach is one of the best places to enjoy the clear waters and seafood restaurants that Madeira is famous for.
Porto Santo is a sandy paradise 43km (27 miles) north-east of Madeira. While it’s possible to take a scenic 10-minute flight from Funchal, it’s more of an adventure to hire a car and take the ferry instead. Once you’re on the idyllic island, there’s plenty to do, from wreck diving, golf and horse riding to simply lounging around on the beach.
1. Madeira’s very hilly, so make sure you’re comfortable with the clutch, or hire an automatic, as there’ll be lots of steep drives.
2. Unlike in the UK, where you can drive to the other side of the road if you spot a parking space, street parking needs to be in the same direction of travel in Madeira.
3. Prepare in advance for toll roads: many of them don’t have booths, so you’ll need to obtain an e-payment device or pay at a post office later. You can usually hire this device when you pick up your rental car.
A fair fuel policy (also known as full-to-full or same-to-same) means you’ll only pay for the fuel you use. All car rental deals compared on TravelSupermarket come with a fair fuel policy, so you can book your hire car safe in the knowledge there will be no nasty surprises at drop-off. More information on TravelSupermarket’s commitment to fair fuel policies can be found here.
All rental deals compared on TravelSupermarket include mandatory fees (for example, one-way and young driver surcharges) in your rental quote at the time of booking, meaning you’ll know the full price of your car hire upfront.
The minimum age to hire a car in Madeira depends on the rental company. Generally though, it some rental providers set it at 19 and others at 21. In any case, you’ll need to have held a full driving licence for at least one year. Anyone under 25 is considered a ‘young driver’ and is generally subject to an additional fee.
The usual. This includes a valid driving licence, a credit or debit card – if you’ve pre-booked, then the card you used – and a photo ID, which, in most cases, will be your passport. An International Driving Permit is not required if you hold a UK licence.
As the cost of your rental includes some sort of cover, such as theft protection and/or a damage waiver, you don’t need to have car hire excess insurance. Nevertheless, for peace of mind, it’s advised that you do take out a policy as, if you have to make a claim, the excess owed can be covered entirely or reduced significantly. On-the-day walk-up rates can be pricey, so have a look at what’s being offered by standalone providers online instead.
Yes. Some car hire companies in Madeira will accept debit cards, along with credit cards. If you don’t have a credit card, a cash deposit may be required. Confirm with your provider what the requirements are for a debit card.
Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Europcar, Firefly, Goldcar, Global Rent-a-Car, Guerin, Hertz, MadeiraRent, National, Rodavante, Sixt and Thrifty can be found at Madeira Airport.
Premium location fees make airports more expensive for car hire, but if you spend some time online comparing a range of deals offered by numerous providers, you’ll find similarly priced rentals both at the airport and off-site.
Due to the small size of the island, the best and most practical option is to pick up and drop off your hire car at the airport. For alternatives to this, contact your car hire provider.
Absolutely. You can hire a car the same day in Madeira. It’ll cost more, especially compared to an online booking made in advance, but if it’s more convenient, the option to hire on the day is there.
Yes, you can hire a car if you are 21 years of age in Madeira. The main requirement is for you to have held your driving licence for at least one year – and, of course, you must have your licence with you when you travel. A ‘young driver surcharge’ will apply.
