If you are looking for nightlife, there is a lively strip in the Sao Joao area, which is home to bustling bars and clubs that are open until the early hours of the morning. But if you prefer a quieter and more relaxing holiday, the old town will cater for your needs. A more peaceful area, the old town is home to historic churches dating back to the 1500s and is bordered with restaurants and bars. The central square accesses a shopper's heaven via streets full of gift shops and street stalls.

Prais dos Pescadores, or 'Fisherman's Beach', is located next to the old town and is lined with bars and restaurants. Adjacent to Fisherman's Beach is Prais do Peneco, the second main beach in Albufeira. Both beaches can become crowded in summer months, but with Albufeira car hire, access to less busy beaches is an option. Praia de Gale beach is only accessible via car, which is 6km to the west of Albufeira. It is one of the best beaches in the area, renowned for its long and sandy shore.

The best time to visit Albufeira is in the summer months when you can enjoy long days and temperatures peak around 30C. Even in the winter months, temperatures are pleasant and sit in the 20s.

There are plenty of restaurants where you can sample the local cuisine in Albufeira, including a wide variety of seafood. Restaurants nearer to the beachfront tend to sell at tourist prices, so seek out a back street with better quality food at cheaper prices.

Portugal's capital, Lisbon, is just over two hours away by car if you fancy a change from the beach scene. It is a minefield of culture - offering museums, cathedrals and monasteries to admire - and gives you the opportunity to ride the iconic yellow trams around the quaint streets.

You can continue your trip to nearby Sintra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visiting Castelo dos Mouros, a 9th century castle, is a must.

Alte is just 30 minutes north from Albufeira. Well known for its springs, Fonte Pequena (Small Spring) and Fonte Grande (Big Spring), Alte is a picturesque village that is well worth the short car journey.

Keen golfers tend to use Albufeira as a base and drive to some of the best courses, including Vale do Lobo.
