They often stop dead to shoot the breeze with passing drivers, hurtle down hillsides glued to mobile phones and squeeze into itsy-bitsy parking spaces at all kinds of angles.

2. Brace yourself for some hair-raising hairpin bends, especially if you’re driving to Mount Teide. The road is gorgeous but the turns can be a little terrifying, so be sure to concentrate at all times.
