Renting a car in Tenerife is by far the best way to travel around the island. In general, the roads are great and the freedom of your own four wheels will give you access to parts of the island that other tourists just can’t reach. Not only that, but it’s practical, convenient and affordable.

During a fun-filled holiday in Costa Adeje, car hire enables you to explore tiny traditional villages, stop for a panoramic picnic, get out to snap a few scenic shots and make your own rules. There’s nothing quite like it.

Where can you hire a car from?

You can pick up your hire car for your Costa Adeje holiday directly from the airport, where you’ll find all the usual suspects – such as Auto Reisen, Avis, Europcar, Goldcar and Hertz - vying for business. The easiest option is to return the car back to the airport at the end of your trip, as organising another drop-off point can be a needless, sometimes expensive, headache. Petrol is far cheaper than mainland Europe and unleaded is called sin plomo 98, while diesel is gasoleo.

Where to explore

There’s far more to Tenerife than beaches – something that will become instantly clear as you begin ex-ploring the island by car.The twisty-turny road trip into Mount Teide National park is incredible on a sunny day, with rapidly chang-ing landscapes and increasingly knee-wobbling views down over the coastline. It makes for a brilliant day out, and it’s far more memorable than sitting on a sweaty tour bus all day.Equally, you’ll find traditional towns hugging the hillsides and tiny fishing villages sandwiched between tourist resorts, giving you a whole new perspective on the island. Moreover, a hire car gives you direct access to the north of the island, allowing you to discover the delights of Puerto de la Cruz and the unde-veloped countryside.

If you’re a golfer, Costa Adeje car rental is a no-brainer. Throw your clubs in the backseat and take a few swings on the 18-hole green at Golf Costa Adeje, stretched over banana plantations that give way to the ocean.

Kite surfers can drive down to the hipster hangout of El Médano and soak up the bohemian vibes be-tween bouts on the waves.

Top tips for Car hire in Costa Adeje

  1. Watch out for the “interesting” driving manoeuvres of the local tinerfeños, who quite often laugh in the face of the rules. They often stop dead to shoot the breeze with passing drivers, hurtle down hillsides glued to mobile phones and squeeze into itsy-bitsy parking spaces at all kinds of angles.

These are just the local ways, so you’ll need to work around them if you rent a car in Tenerife.

  2. Brace yourself for some hair-raising hairpin bends, especially if you’re driving to Mount Teide. The road is gorgeous but the turns can be a little terrifying, so be sure to concentrate at all times.

If you get stuck behind a puttering banana truck, DO NOT attempt to overtake in the hills. Instead, switch into second gear and enjoy the scenery. After all, you’re on holiday!

  3. Sunday is the most popular day for local outings and events, so you might be faced with all kinds of madness on the road. Expect some cheeky driving and stay calm if you find yourself in the middle of a Hell’s Angels’ meeting, a car rally or a cycling tour.

When it comes to Sundays, expect the unexpected - or at least embrace it.
