Laidback, even in the height of the tourist season, the seaside town of Jávea in the Costa Blanca is a great spot for a chilled-out getaway.
Sat between Valencia and Alicante, Jávea is a road tripper’s delight where you can explore quaint villages, sandy beaches and hidden coves along the Costa Blanca coastline. Hire a car in Jávea and visit Moraira’s rock pools, take a day trip to Guadalest’s castle and go river swimming at Pou Clar.
You’re also just a 20-minute drive from Granadella Beach, a beautiful horseshoe bay that’s perfect for snorkelling.
Whether you need four wheels for a day trip or a car to use for the duration of your holiday, Jávea has lots of local rental companies in the town centre.
If you book in advance and online you can streamline the whole process of picking up your hire car – and get a good deal while you’re at it. Be sure to check opening and closing hours when you go to pick up your rental and remember to bring all the necessary ID and documents.
The following car hire companies have offices in convenient central Jávea locations:
Jávea is surrounded by dramatic coastal drives, with the Costa Blanca’s best attractions within easy reach. The roads along this east coast stretch are well-maintained and signposted, so getting around in your hire car is pretty straightforward.
If you haven’t driven in Spain before, there are a few things to be aware of. The big one? Spain drives on the right side of the road. The other is that speed limit signs are in kilometres per hour – it’s 120km/h (approximately 75 mph) on the motorways, 90-100km/h (approximately 56-62 mph) on main roads and 20-50km/h (approximately 12-31 mph) in built-up areas.
Spain also has toll motorways (‘Autopistas’), which you can spot by the AP prefix on signs. You simply take a ticket when you enter and pay by cash or card when you exit. A warning triangle, headlamp beam deflectors and reflective jackets are compulsory in Spain, so check your Jávea hire car comes with these.
Note that if you go off the beaten track, the road quality can suddenly deteriorate. Mountain roads can also be narrow and steep – take your time and watch out for oncoming traffic and cyclists.
Any additional requirements: Full driving licence and a second form of identification (eg a passport)
