Search for the best car hire deals in Copenhagen

You won’t necessarily need car hire in Copenhagen – the city is relatively compact, bike lanes are omnipresent and the public transport system runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

If you want to go beyond the city boundaries, however, and discover the surrounding Zealand region, driving will give you a lot more freedom.

Beaches, sea cliffs and romantic islands

North Zealand, an area often referred to as the Danish Riviera because of its lengthy stretches of sandy beaches and pretty seaside resorts, is less than 50 minutes by road from Copenhagen. The region is also scattered with majestic royal palaces, the most famous among them being Kronborg Castle in Helsingør, the setting for Shakespeare’s tragedy, ‘Hamlet’.

Arranging car rental in Copenhagen will also give you access to spectacular natural scenery. Denmark’s tallest sea cliffs, Mons Klint in South Zealand, are less than two hour’s drive from Copenhagen. And, if the idea of island hopping for the day appeals to you, Smålandshavet archipelago is just a short journey west of the city.

You could even visit Sweden for an afternoon. It takes a mere 35 minutes to travel from Copenhagen to Malmo across the Øresund Bridge. The journey can be done by train, but only those in cars can really enjoy the views of the city from the bridge’s 57-metre (187-feet) main span.

Once you touch down at Copenhagen Airport, renting a car from major global brands such as Avis, Budget, Enterprise and Sixt is easy. The service is fast and friendly, and you will be on the road in no time. But will it be the cheapest car hire in Copenhagen?

To find out, simply compare cheap Copenhagen car rental deals on TravelSupermarket before you travel. Booking before you go is not only likely to bag you the cheapest rates, but also speed up the pick-up process at Copenhagen Airport.

Before you drive off in your rental car, scan the dashboard to see if there is a parking permit; all drivers who park in the city are required to display one. Car hire companies usually issue these as standard, but it doesn’t hurt to double check yours is in place right from the start.

Top tips for car hire in Copenhagen

  1. In Copenhagen, people are encouraged to bike, walk or use public transport instead of driving and priority on roads is always given to pedestrians. So, watch out for people crossing on foot, especially at traffic lights.

  2. Drink driving laws are strict in Denmark. The legal limit is on par with the rest of Europe: 0.5 grams of alcohol per litre of blood. However, it’s worth remembering, if you cause an accident on Danish soil and fail a breath test, you will almost certainly spend some time in jail.

  3. Denmark uses pupilometers. If you’ve never seen a pupilometer, it’s best to keep it that way. Designed as a drug test for drivers, these devices are carried by all Danish traffic police and used as frequently as breathalysers with the same harsh penalties for failure.
