Why go?

With car hire, Oman is an open book waiting to be read. Pick your chapter when you arrange Oman car rental with TravelSuperMarket.

The Sultanate of Oman is located on the Arabian Peninsula, where the waters of the Arabian Sea meet the rugged cliffs and soft sands of the coastline. It’s a big country – around the same size as Poland or Italy – and distances between attractions are vast. Oman car hire makes it easier to see some of the highlights in your chosen holiday destination – especially as public transport outside of the cities is patchy (and can be hard to find in the cities too!).

There are plenty of great-value mini and economy cars available to rent in Oman, though you might consider booking a four-wheel drive vehicle. The main roads in Oman are excellent but outside of the urban areas you might appreciate a vehicle that can deal with harsher terrains. Just remember to check with your car-rental company if you plan to take the car to certain remote areas as driving on some roads (such as dry riverbeds) could invalidate your rental insurance.

You should also check the British Government’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) website for travel advice before you book your break in Oman. While the vast majority of visits are trouble free, the FCO advises travellers to maintain a high level of security awareness in this part of the world.

Most visitors to Oman arrive at Muscat International Airport (MCT), which serves the country’s capital. You can collect your car from here when you arrive. Alternatively, arrange for collection at a downtown location in Muscat.

Pre-booking car hire is a sure-fire way to find the cheapest rental rates as well as securing the vehicle that best suits your needs. Use the TravelSupermarket search tool to tell us when and where and we’ll show you some of the hottest deals on the car-rental market. Our price-comparison tool also allows you to find cheap flights to Oman and fantastic rates on the best Oman hotels.

Where to explore

When you book car rental, Oman can be explored at your leisure. So where will you go?

The capital, Muscat, is an obvious starting point for tours of this enthralling country, espeically as most visitors arrive at the city’s airport. With its ancient sites and busy markets, Muscat is a sprawling city, which is why many visitors choose to book car hire and see the sights at a time and pace that suits them; public transport isn’t great and getting around on foot can be complicated. If you are staying in Qurm/Qurum, where the best beach hotels in Muscat are located, you will need your car to get into central Muscat easily, quickly and cheaply. But however you travel, be sure to see the Old Town as well as the modern attractions that converge on the Corniche – the waterfront promenade.

Historic forts dot the centre of Muscat, one of the most famous is the 500-year-old Al-Jalali Fort. One of the better-known forts outside of the city is Nizwa Fort, which is just short of two hours from Muscat by road. The oasis city of Nizwa is a popular tourist attraction and its souk is worth the trip alone. Bahla Fort is just 30 minutes on from here and both are worth taking the time to see.

The turtle reserve of Ras al-Jinz is near the city of Sur, which is a two-hour drive along the southern coastline from Muscat. As well as turtle spotting, visitors can venture into the nearby desert to spend a night under canvas and a blanket of stars.
