When you’ve picked up your car, take the A2 motorway south to reach Ljubljana’s city centre or head north-west on the A2 to reach the beautiful waters of Lake Bled. Alternatively, drive north-west on the E61 and you’ll reach Lake Bohinj, in Triglav National Park.

Like most countries in Europe, motorists drive on the right-hand side of the road in Slovenia. If you’re used to driving on the left, an automatic hire car can make road trips in Slovenia a little easier. Roads are generally good and well-signposted, too.

Speed limits in urban areas in Ljubljana are 50km/h (31 mph), 90km/h (56 mph) on rural roads and on motorways you can go up to 130km/h (81 mph).

If you’re planning on visiting Ljubljana in winter, your car rental must also have winter tyres equipped from 15 November to 15 March.

Ljubljana has truly embraced eco-friendly policies, meaning there are lots of pedestrianised sections and restricted zones that limit cars at certain times, especially near the historic old town.
