There are a few things to remember when driving in the Basque region and beyond. Firstly, Spain drives on the right, so expect things to feel the ‘wrong way’ around when approaching traffic lights, roundabouts and junctions.

And unless you want to add €200 to the cost of your holidays, make sure young children always travel in the back, too. Anyone under 12 and less than 135cm in height must use an approved booster seat in the rear of the vehicle. You can potentially be fined for driving in the wrong footwear too, so don't be tempted to hop in the driver's seat in your flip-flops.

Fines for drink-driving are even steeper, ranging up to €1,000. Spain's legal limit is slightly lower than the UK’s, at 0.05%.

Keep an eye on the posted speed limits when you're out and about. If you don't see a sign, it's usually 20km/h (approximately 12 mph) in residential areas, 50km/h (approximately 31 mph) in built-up zones, between 90-100km/h (approximately 56-62 mph) in rural areas, and 120km/h (approximately 75 mph) on motorways.
