For some, Phuket is a dream destination, a place to have muscles stretched and soothed during beach-side massages. And what beaches! Circling the island are ribbons of perfect white sands, sandwiched between waters the colour of topaz and trees the colour of fresh-from-the-mortar pesto. For others, Phuket is a wild holiday hotspot, ripe for full moon parties and dancing the night away. The great news is that these versions of Phuket exist happily on the same island. Pockets of peace and serenity lure tourists in one direction, while party-goers happily trundle off to the late nights of Patong.
The largest of the nation’s islands, Phuket is washed by the waters of the Andaman Sea off the west coast of southern Thailand. This piece of paradise has long been a favourite of holidaymakers and visitors are well catered for at a variety of resorts. You can check in at five-star havens of luxury and indulgence or unpack your beach clobber in a budget hotel that costs less per night than fish and chips for two.
And while you can tuck into fish and chips in the Brit bars of Patong, elsewhere on the island you can expect a fresh platter of sizzling seafood, fiery noodles, delicious curries and soups flavoured with succulent herbs and spices that pack a real punch.
It takes around an hour to drive from the north of Phuket to the south and less than 30 minutes to cross from coast to coast, but the island is packed with attractions and Phuket car rental is a worthwhile investment. Pick up your pre-booked vehicle at the airport and you can also save on the cost of resort transfers. Alternatively, you can choose to collect your car at any one of the convenient locations in the downtown areas of Phuket.

The main beach resorts on Phuket can be found along the west coast of the island, where the beaches dazzle visitors. The shoreline of the east coast is rocky and hasn’t been developed to the same extent. Resorts in the west include party-central Patong, Karon Beach and Kata in the south, while further north are other popular beach destinations, including Surin, Bang Tao and Nai Thon. Wherever you stay, having a car makes it easy to see the sights at your own pace.
Consider a journey into the magnificent Khao Phra Thaeo Wildlife Park and its Gibbon Rehabilitation Project. The Bang Pae Waterfall is close by, so you can fill an entire day within this dense knot of jungle.
For a totally fresh take on island life, away from the spas and the bars, drive to Old Phuket Town and tour the shrines, temples, shops and museums of this remarkably attractive part of the main city.
A visit to Chalong Bay, in the south, is also worthwhile. Here you will find Wat Chalong, one of Phuket’s most visited temples. Be sure not to miss Big Buddha either, though it’s practically impossible to do so as he sits atop a hill and measures an impressive 45 metres from head to toe.
While you are in the south of Phuket, try and be at Promthep Cape as the sun sets over the sea. You’ll be joined by plenty of other camera-wielding tourists, but it’s a sunset you won’t forget in a hurry.
