Whether you’re in the Hampshire town of Andover for work or play, a hire car offers you the freedom to discover the area at your own leisure.
And it’s well worth exploring, too. This small market town in the Test Valley is surrounded by beautiful countryside and must-see attractions including the iconic Stonehenge. You’re also within an hour’s drive of Oxford and Southampton – both deeply historic cities.
If you’re already in town, you can hire a car from Andover’s Enterprise outlet or the local provider Andover Self Drive. You can also collect your hire car from Southampton Airport, which is approximately 45km (28 miles away). There you will find big names like Avis, Alamo, Budget, Europcar, Enterprise and National.
Once you have your keys, you’re ready to hit the road – and there’s a lot to see around Andover. Start with Stonehenge, which is approximately 28km (17 miles) west along the A303. While driving in this direction, stop off in Salisbury to see the Magna Carta at the cathedral before taking a stroll around the stately home of Wilton House. Alternatively, head to Longleat Safari and Adventure Park, which is popular for family days out.
The A343 will take you to Newbury or Highclere Castle of Downton Abbey fame. This road is often reported to be in an unsatisfactory condition due to potholes and trees, so if you’re concerned, consider taking an alternative route via the A34.
Winchester is around half an hour south on the A303 and A34. When visiting the cathedral, use one of the park-and-rides to avoid busy city centre parking. From the city, you can also take the M3 towards Southampton and the coast. A port city, you can take your rental car on the ferry from here to the Isle of Wight, where you’ll find lovely beaches, pubs and outdoor activities.
For another scenic drive, take a trip to the New Forest National Park – it’s doable in a day from Andover. One of the biggest charms of the forest is the resident wild ponies and other animals. However, they do roam onto the roads, so it’s important to drive slowly and carefully, especially at night.
