Whether you’re in the Hampshire town of Andover for work or play, a hire car offers you the freedom to discover the immediate and wider area at your own leisure. And it’s well worth exploring, too, as the small market town in the Test Valley is surrounded by beautiful countryside and must-see attractions including the iconic Stonehenge. You’re also within an hour’s drive of cities like Oxford and Southampton. To compare deals on a hire car, use our handy search tool above.
If you’re already in town, you can hire a car in Andover and pick it up from Enterprise Car & Van Hire or the local provider Andover Self Drive. Alternatively, you can collect your hire car from Southampton Airport, which is approximately 30 miles away (a 40 or so minute drive). There you will find big names like Avis, Alamo, Budget, Europcar, Enterprise and National.
Once you have your keys, you’re ready to hit the road – and there’s a lot to see around Andover. Start with Stonehenge, about 24 miles west along the A303. While driving in this direction, stop off in Salisbury to see the Magna Carta at the cathedral before taking a stroll around the stately home of Wilton House. Alternatively, consider Longleat, which is a popular family day out.
The A343 is the road that will take you to Newbury or Highclere Castle of Downton Abbey fame. Do drive carefully as it has previously been reported that this road has something of a mixed history with its general condition. If you’re worried, consider taking an alternative route via the A34.
Winchester is around half an hour south on the A303 and A34. When visiting the cathedral, use one of the park-and-rides to avoid the busy city centre parking. From the city, you can also take the M3 south towards Southampton and the coast. A port city, you can take your hire car on the ferry from here to the Isle of Wight, where you’ll find lovely beaches, pubs and outdoor activities.
For another scenic drive, take a trip to the New Forest National Park – it’s doable in a day from Andover. This area has much to explore and more than 130 car parks where you can stop to enjoy a walk or visit one of the towns and villages. One of the charms of the forest is the wild ponies and other animals that live here. However, they do roam onto the roads, so do drive slowly and carefully, especially at night.
