Think Great Yarmouth, think arcades, fairground rides, candy floss, chippies and a sandy beach – all essential ingredients for a British seaside getaway. It’s also a fantastic starting point for a road trip along the Norfolk coast.
After you’ve had your fun at Pleasure Beach amusement park – and got up close with the weird and wonderful creatures at the SEA LIFE aquarium – hop into your hire car to visit the pretty seaside towns of Cromer, Sheringham or Holkham.
With several pick-up points throughout Great Yarmouth, collecting your hire car in the town is easy. One local provider, Norfolk Hire, is a short walk from the train station, while Gapton Car Hire is a five-minute taxi ride away and offers camper vans as well as cars. Enterprise also operates in the area.
Once you have your keys, you're ready for a memorable trip around Great Yarmouth. The A47 is the main road into town, travelling through the Broads from Norwich and heading down to Lowestoft. Alternatively, the A143 takes you south and away from the coast into Suffolk. You can also motor along smaller roads to explore the Norfolk coastline and take in some gorgeous sea views.
Thanks to the unearthing of some historic gems – including some of the oldest human footprints in the world – the 35km (22 miles) between Weybourne and Cart Gap has been dubbed the ‘Deep History Coast’.
It’s a fantastic stretch of coastline to travel along from Great Yarmouth. Download the ‘DHC Explorer AR’ app for guided walks, giant mammoths and to help identify any fossils you find on West Runton Beach.
Beyond the beaches – Gorleston or Winterton-on-Sea are also well worth checking out if you’re after quieter stretches of sand – there is plenty to see and do by car. You can nip up to Norwich for shopping, theatre and dinner, or visit BeWILDerwood for an exhilarating day of outdoor adventure.
Parking in Great Yarmouth is generally simple, with car parks close to the beaches and attractions. There are several long-stay and short-stay options near the seafront and in the town centre, too.
Do note that in summer, Norfolk’s beaches can get very busy, so it’s worth planning ahead to secure a convenient spot for your hire car.
