When you find a cheap deal on car hire, York becomes a wonderful base from which to see more of this historic county...
Don’t go anywhere yet though; there’s plenty to see and do in this river-side city.
York is an ideal destination for those who are fascinated by history. York Minster is the biggest Gothic cathedral in northern Europe, Clifford's Tower was built by William the Conqueror and the York Dungeons can take you on a trip back to medieval times.
York itself has plenty of attractions, such as the York Castle Museum, the Yorkshire Museum and the National Railway Museum. They all have fascinating exhibits and the Jorvik Centre takes you back in time with the smells, sights and sounds of Viking life.
The Ouse River runs through York, providing pretty riverside walks on summer days. Alternatively, you can take a boat tour with Yorkboat and relax with a drink in the sunshine or take an evening cruise as the sun sets. Cafés such as Betty's Tea Shop, which dates back to 1919, provide tasty cakes and refreshments. Chocolate lovers will also be fans of York. Smarties, Aero and Kit Kat bars were all first produced here, and the Chocolate Trail of York takes you round chocolate-related sites.
York car hire is a great way to get the best of your trip to the city, since many of the must-see places are easily accessible by car. The racecourse, for example, is a top place for a day out if you love the excitement of horse racing.
Book car rental in advance of your trip to make savings. You can collect your pre-booked vehicle at a convenient downtown location.

Using York as your base you can hop in your hire car and change the scenery within minutes. Where will you go?
The nearest airport to York is Leeds-Bradford Airport (LBA). Both Hull and Leeds are well worth visiting and you can also take advantage of car hire in York to explore the Yorkshire moors, which are gorgeous, bleak and dramatic all year round. The spa town of Harrogate is nearby too, as is lovely Knaresborough, while the coast is just minutes away in the opposite direction. No one said it was going to be easy to decide where to go next!
Drive south-west of York to visit the vibrant city of Leeds. It takes less than half an hour to reach the city centre. You’ll be joined by plenty of other fun-seekers, keen to tour the shops, pubs, sports and entertainment venues of Leeds.
The town of Knaresborough is a 40-minute drive west of York, with Harrogate just 10 minutes further on. Pretty Knaresborough is known for its castle and scenic vistas, as well as the legendary Mother Shipton’s Cave, while Harrogate is an elegant spa destination where you can find another branch of Betty’s Tea Shop (if you couldn’t get a table in York).
York is well located to take advantage of the raw and rugged beauty of Yorkshire. The national parks of the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors can both be accessed from the city in less than an hour.
For fun at the seaside, though, drive east and hit the sands at Bridlington, Filey or Scarborough. Even Whitby is only just over an hour from York.
The city of York is central to some of the best tourist spots in Yorkshire, so car hire is a great investment.
