Shortlisted as the UK City of Culture 2021, Paisley is one of Scotland’s largest and most historic towns. Hire a car to explore the knockout surrounding scenery, including Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park.
A few car hire outlets are located in Paisley, but with Glasgow Airport just a 10-minute drive to the north, you can arrange airport pick up with a national car hire agency.
There are eight car rental companies located near domestic arrivals, including Avis, Europcar, Enterprise and Hertz. The stiff competition means that it’s easy to get a cheap deal on car hire if you’re prepared to compare rental prices online and book before your trip.
Paisley makes the perfect base for exploring western Scotland, partly because it doesn’t have the congestion issues of central Glasgow yet still enjoys its proximity to the M8 and M77.
There are cheap metered parking bays in the town centre as well as short and long stay car parks. Park at Paisley Piazza or Paisley Centre for easy access to a huge range of high street shops as well as historic attractions, such as the ancient Abbey, Town Hall and Coats Observatory. Don’t miss out on a wander around Forbes Place, which was at the heart of the Paisley shawl-making industry.
Take advantage of car hire to reach some of the most dramatic scenery in the Scottish Lowlands. Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park is a 15-minute drive away, while Balloch, the gateway to Loch Lomond is closer to half an hour. This is where you can hop on a cruise and enjoy fantastic loch views.
Central Glasgow is also straightforward to reach, with easy access via the M8. Attractions within 25 minutes of Paisley include the Glasgow Science Centre, Ibrox Stadium and the Riverside Museum. Culture buffs should make the 90-minute drive to Edinburgh for endless theatrical, artistic and culinary attractions. If you fancy taking your rental car somewhere a little more adventurous, drive 45 minutes to Ardrossan for ferries across to the Isle of Arran and the Kintyre peninsula.
Head north along the A82 from Paisley and you’ll find yourself in the Scottish Highlands. The sweeping road that meanders through the mountains, via towns such as Glen Coe and Fort William, is the starting point for endless adventures, from walking up Ben Nevis to sea kayaking around Loch Linnhe.
Fort William is less than a three-hour drive from Paisley, while Oban, with its ferry routes to the islands of the Inner Hebrides, is just over two hours away.
