The oldest city in Wales, Bangor is brimming with history and heritage. In just a few days around here, you can walk through ancient castle grounds, take in spectacular coastal paths, sip whisky at traditional distilleries and get back to the wild in enormous national parks.
But to see the best of the sights, you’ll need some wheels. Hop in a hire car and you can head for your pick of Areas of Outstanding Beauty – across to Llŷn, down to Snowdonia or over the water to Anglesey.
There are a few car hire companies to choose from in Bangor, including Stermat and Enterprise. If you’re looking for a little more choice, Hertz, Thrifty, Green Motion and plenty more are available in Liverpool, just under an hour and 30 minutes away. The drive along the North Wales coast is a great way to start your holiday too.
Wherever you collect your keys, you shouldn’t have too much trouble getting around. Bangor is a small city, almost entirely surrounded by the A55 – the North Wales Expressway – the A487 and the A5. Aside from a little traffic at peak times, these main roads make it nice and easy to navigate.
If you want to expand your horizons to Anglesey, take the A5 across the Menai Strait for some spectacular views. From here, you can follow the A5025 into the stunning Welsh countryside for quiet coves, pebble beaches, limestone cliffs and sensational sand dunes.
Hop on the A55 instead and ride straight up to Holyhead. Here you can take in the views across the port from the 6th-century St Cybi’s Church, step back in time at Bronze Age and Neolithic burial sites and unleash your inner twitcher at the RSPB visitor centre. Stop off at Rhoscolyn Beach on your way up and you may spot a seal or two, as well.
Just 45 minutes in the other direction from Bangor is the UK’s second-highest peak, Snowdon. If you’ve packed your walking boots, you’ll want to take on its mountain trails whether you reach the summit or not. On the other hand, you could just take a seat on the Snowdon Railway and ride in comfort all the way to the top.
The architectural masterpiece of Portmeirion is in this neck of the woods too. Stop off here for ornamental gardens, Italian-style piazza and picturesque quay.
As well as spectacular scenery, North Wales has its fair share of narrow roads, a little treacherous terrain and the occasional sheep hazard when driving in the mountains or away from the main roads. But weather permitting, there is nothing out here that should put you off getting behind the wheel. Just be sure to leave enough time to enjoy the view.
