Brazil offers up numerous holiday options: If you are a beach devotee, you can relax on soft white sands occasionally looking up to admire some of the world's most daring beachwear.

If you love getting close to nature, you will be spoilt for choice by activities including visiting the magnificent Iguassu Falls on the border of the country, taking a trip up the Amazon River and exploring the rainforests.

If you prefer faster-paced breaks, you will thrive in the vibrant city of Rio de Janeiro.

Rio de Janeiro is the perfect place to start your Brazilian adventure. Not only does the vibrant city have legendary nightlife with clubs where you can samba until dawn, but the city's famous beaches such as Copacabana and Ipanema are idyllic places to spend days on end.

And make sure you visit the Christ the Redeemer statue which overlooks the city as well as the Botanical Garden. An event not to miss in the city is the flamboyant Rio Carnival.

However, Rio isn't the only city in the country worth a visit. There's also Salvador da Bahia in the north east of the country where colonial architecture from the 17th and 18th centuries is sure to impress and the food is sure to delight your taste buds; Sao Paulo, the largest city in South America, where you'll find cultural attractions galore; and Natal in the north east whose Ponta Negra Beach and Via Costeria attract holidaymakers every year looking for stunning beaches and luxury hotels.

The peak time to visit the country is during Brazil's summer (December to March) so flight prices go up during this period. But, whether you want to go on an adventure holiday trekking in the Amazon Rainforest, to party during Rio's Carnival or to be pampered on an all-inclusive break, it's important to book your flights in advance.

Flights to Brazil take around 14 hours and most international visitors will arrive at Rio de Janeiro International Airport (also known as Galeão; GIG) and Sao Paulo's Aeroporto Internacional de Guarulhos (GRU).

However, you can also fly from the UK to other Brazilian airports including: Brasilia International Airport (BSB) in the centre of the country; Tancredo Neves International Airport (CNF) in Belo Horizonte in the south east; Alberto Alcolumbre International Airport (MCP) in the northern city of Macapa.

Depending on your itinerary, another airport option is Tabatinga International Airport (TBT) where the Amazon River enters Brazil; and Fortaleza's Pinto Martins International Airport (FOR), Natal's Augusto Severo International Airport (NAT), Recife's Guararapes Gilberto Freyre International Airport (REC), and Salvador's Deputado Luis Eduardo Magalhaes International Airport (SSA) - all in the north east of the country.

For those flying into the major Brazilian airports, transfer options are efficient and regular. However, guidelines do recommend that if you are new to the busy cities, like Rio de Janeiro, opt for the taxi service.

Crime is an issue for tourists and getting yourself safely to your destination is a priority, especially if you have lots of luggage or children with you.

Most travellers opt for an official Radio Taxi - these are regulated which means that whether you are travelling day or night, you are charged the same rate (expect to tip your driver though).

Bus services are a good option too and much cheaper - those travelling in groups should opt for a licenced mini-bus transfer which can be organised in advance or at the airport.

The range of accommodation and places to stay in Brazil are incredibly varied so be sure to do your research and book as far in advance as possible...

Thanks to Brazil hosting the World Cup (2014) there has been a major drive in the country to boost its accommodation offerings and to really capitalise on the huge numbers of international tourists flocking to this country of contrasts.

For first-time travellers, it is recommended you do not go off the tourist trail too far but stay close to major cities like Rio de Janeiro or Sao Paulo. Here, expect to find well-known hotel groups and luxury accommodation.

While holidaymakers will find a great atmosphere, shopping and nightlife here, it is important to factor in that there are some slum areas not far from the major cities in Brazil.

Be careful not to venture to places that are not recommended, unless you are a seasoned traveller in Brazil.

For safety and comfort, it is recommended that travellers stay central when booking hotels or accommodation. If travelling to the various football stadiums opt for the approved hotels, hostels and campsites.
