Blanketed in thick forest and capped by the twin peaks of Gros Piton and Petit Piton, the Caribbean island of St Lucia is a real stunner. The average journey time for direct flights to St Lucia from UK airports is eight hours and 45 minutes. You can fly to St Lucia direct from Manchester and London, or book great-value connecting flights from other UK airports, such as Leeds, Edinburgh and Belfast.
Pack swimwear for snorkelling trips and long days at the water’s edge. Take comfortable sightseeing outfits for time in the capital of Castries, or at Pigeon Island National Park. And don’t forget a smart ensemble or two for candlelit dinners under the stars. You might even want to smuggle your trainers in your suitcase, just in case you are gripped by the urge to trek through the island’s lush rainforest.

With direct access from the UK, Brits have no problem jetting into this Caribbean island paradise.
There are daily services from the UK with British Airways flights out of London Gatwick taking a little under nine hours to reach the island. Virgin Atlantic also flies year round from Gatwick, while BA offers connecting services from around the UK and Thomas Cook runs a non-stop service from Manchester.
You can also fly to St Lucia via the USA with either American Airlines through Miami and Charlotte or with Delta via Atlanta. Both airlines fly from a number of major UK cities such as Manchester and Edinburgh in addition to London.
You’re a travel-planning superhero. And that means you’ll want to plan your airport transfers before you go (read on, we’ve got your back)…
There are two airports in St Lucia: the George F.L. Charles Airport (SLU) near Castries and Hewanorra International Airport (UVF), near Vieux Fort in the south of the island.
But unless you’re arriving from a neighbouring island, it’s likely you’ll touch down at Hewanorra.
Most island hotels offer a transfer service. Some send private cars to collect guests, others arrange shared transfers by coach or minibus. These services can prove good value for money, as can the independent airport shuttle services.
But taxis – and helicopter transfers – are also widely available. Expect to pay around 70 US dollars (200 Eastern Caribbean Dollars/£50) for a taxi from the airport to Castries.
Alternatively, pre-book car hire in St Lucia and get about at your own pace. Organise collection at the airport and you can save on the cost of transfers too.
