Flights to Skiathos take holidaymakers to a beautiful Greek island in the Aegean Sea. Skiathos is one of the most talked about Greek islands, thanks to its beauty and the more than 60 beaches to choose from.
Take a flight to Skiathos, where the summer sun beats down on one of the most striking islands in Greece...
Skiathos flights land at the island's single airport, Skiathos Airport Alexandros Papadiamantis (JSI). During the summer months, there are direct flights from the UK, although you can also travel via Athens. Skiathos's many high-quality restaurants, boutique accommodation and authentic Greek atmosphere attract a cosmopolitan crowd of well-to-do tourists.
At only around 7.5 miles long and 4.5 miles wide, Skiathos is small but simple to get around. A single tarmac road is crossed by dirt tracks and narrow paved roads, and there's an excellent bus service to the main beaches and attractions.
Skiathos Town, the island's busy capital, has picturesque cobbled streets and a lovely harbour. It features a host of boutique shops and a sophisticated nightlife.
Just outside Skiathos Town is the Bourtzi, a fortress built to deter pirates in the 13th century. A former primary school built among the ruins has been turned into a visitor centre offering theatrical and musical performances throughout the summer. Other popular attractions include the Evangelistria Monastery, built in 1794 under the island's highest peak. Kounistras Monastery is the spiritual heart of the island, with celebrations every November attended by most of the islanders.
The Alexandros Papadiamantis Museum is the former home of the island's best-known writer, who lived here in the 19th century. Visitors should also take time to seek out the ruins of Kastro, the former capital built on a cliff top.
No visit to Skiathos is complete without a visit to the magical beach at Lalaria, which is accessible only by boat. Set against grey cliffs, the beach is formed from blue-grey marble stones and is washed by startlingly blue waters. If time permits, take a boat trip to the nearby island of Skopelos, which is famous for its flora and fauna and was used as the setting for the film Mamma Mia.
