Once famed for full-moon parties and wild nights, this holiday island has undergone something of a makeover. These days Koh Samui flights are also booked by tourists looking for high-end spa breaks amid a tropical paradise.
The beauty is that you can have it all when you take a flight to Koh Samui...
Koh Samui is a picturesque island located off the east coast of the Kra Isthmus, in Thailand. It is the second largest island in Thailand, after Phuket.
The island is part of the Ang Thong archipelago, made up of resort islands and fishing villages. Visitors to Koh Samui can hang out at Koh Pha Ngan's full moon parties, relax on Lamia Beach or explore around Chaweng Lake.
Other attractions in the area include Chaweng Beach; the island of Koh Tao, with wonderful diving and snorkelling; spectacular Hin Lat Falls; and the Wat Phra Yai Buddhist temples. The fishing village of Bophut is a good place to visit for a view of traditional life. Popular local foods include salted eggs and a tropical fruit known as rambutan.
The Samui Regatta is an annual sailing festival in Koh Samui that attracts competitors from all over the world. The Koh Samui Triathlon, organized by the International Triathlon Union, also brings hundreds of competitors each year.
The island's Buffalo Fighting Festival, which takes place a few times a year on public holidays, is another event involving plenty of ceremony and celebration.
Many flights to Koh Samui go via Bangkok, although others are available via Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. Koh Samui's main airport is Samui International Airport (USM), which is 2km north of the island's main village, Chaweng.
