There are plenty of low-cost Liverpool flights to choose from. After landing at John Lennon Airport (LPL), history enthusiasts should head straight for the Merseyside Maritime Museum and the Liverpool Museum, where a wide range of exhibits tell the story of the city. For a more modern view, head to Albert Dock, where in addition to shops, restaurants and fashionable clubs you can also find The Beatles Story museum and tours celebrating the musical legacy of the band - typical stops include legendary sites such as Penny Lane, Strawberry Fields and the Cavern Club on Mathew Street.

Liverpool has long had a strong association with sport, from the rivalry between Liverpool and Everton football clubs to the hosting of the Grand National, which takes place at Aintree racecourse, but you don't have to be a sports fan to enjoy the city. The Tate Liverpool, the Walker Art Gallery and the Lady Lever Gallery have more than enough exhibits to satisfy the most passionate art enthusiast.

The Liverpool One shopping centre is a great place to indulge in retail therapy. Home to more than 100 stores, Liverpool One offers everything from sports to designer clothing, along with homeware and electronics.

If you need to get away from it all, you can relax in Sefton Park or visit the Wirral or the delightful “soap town” of Port Sunlight. Alternatively, make your way to the coast to enjoy the cast-iron sculptures by Antony Gormley, as well as the beaches and sand dunes of Formby and Crosby. Finally, for a fantastic view of the city skyline, take a trip across the River Mersey on one of the many ferries immortalised in the hit song by another big local band, Gerry and the Pacemakers.
