At the heart of Portugal’s Algarve, Albufeira hotels are ideal bases for exploring this sun-soaked slice of the Iberian Peninsula...
Don’t go anywhere just yet. Yes, Albufeira is central to everything that the Algarve can offer (which is a lot: golf courses, wild Atlantic shorelines, historic towns and water parks are just a few of the highlights). And, yes, car hire in Portugal is incredibly cheap, which makes it irresistible to hit the open road and explore. But visitors to Albufeira can have a great time without leaving the city. Heck, you needn’t even leave your amazing hotel in Albufeira to have an awesome holiday in the sun!
Honey-coloured beaches, an old town maze of pavement cafes and street performers, and the nightlife of The Strip ensure that Albufeira remains in the hearts of visitors, old and young.
Popular with families, couples and singles, hotels in Albufeira are busy all year round, thanks to the spring-like climate of the Algarve.

Knowing where to stay is the first step to finding the right hotel in Albufeira. Come with us on a city tour…
Albufeira is a large city, and its main tourism offerings are the old town and The Strip.
Hotels in Albufeira old town ooze charm and history, as does this lively little area, which is located behind Praia do Peneco (also known as Praia do Tunel), in between the harbour and Praia dos Pescadores, or Fisherman’s Beach – one of the two main beaches in Albufeira. Old town has a central square and a village feel, with nightlife that belies its traditional surroundings; some bars remain open until the very early hours in summertime.
Elsewhere in Albufeira, The Strip is a road packed with bars, clubs, shops, and holidaymakers having a brilliant time. The top part of The Strip runs through the area of Montechoro, while the livelier bottom end is in Areias de Sao Joao. Naturally, these are great areas to look for hotels if you want to be at the heart of the after-dark action.
Other areas to consider looking for cheap accommodation in Albufeira include Oura, where the sands of Praia da Oura and the relaxed vibe of the hotels make the area feel like a village, rather than a neighbourhood of Albufeira. It’s a 20-minute walk from here to the buzziest parts of the city.

Fishing boats dot the sands alongside parasols and loungers on Fisherman’s Beach. It’s one of the main beaches in Albufeira; shallow, aquamarine waters, a choice of restaurants and a unique urban atmosphere make it popular with locals and tourists alike.
A boat trip from the marina
The marina is a pretty place to hang out for a while, with its patchwork of pastel-coloured buildings and welcoming cafes. It’s the perfect place to wait for a boat trip. Will you go diving, fishing, or simply sightseeing along this gorgeous coastline
Just 20 minutes by road from Albufeira – and a great reason to hire a car – is Zoomarine, which combines a water park, a theme park and the opportunity to get up close with marine life, including by swimming with dolphins.
Proving that the natural treasures of the Algarve are not just in the sand, this forest park offers adventures high in the lush forest canopy, as well as paintballing.
Cool off during hot summer days on the slides and in the pools of Aqualand, which is a 25-minute drive from Albufeira. Lazy-river riding goes up a level here, with the addition of a few rapids!
Albufeira knows how to party. Turn up to any of these top annual events for a new take on the city’s party spirit…
Festa do Frango no Churrasco; July: Locals look forward to the “chicken festival” for months. For three days, barbecued chicken is well and truly on the menu in Albufeira’s Guia, where piri-piri chicken was invented. Live music is a satisfying side dish.
Fisherman’s Festival; September: Celebrate the bounty of the sea with the locals in autumn, when all are invited to taste, drink, dance and relax in the sunshine.
New Year; December 31: It feels like most of Portugal flocks to the massive New Year’s Eve party in Albufeira, when Fisherman’s Beach becomes the stage for live music and midnight fireworks. It is essential to book hotels in Albufeira well in advance of travel if your trip coincides with New Year.
