When you rent a car, Brussels becomes a great base from which to see more of Belgium...
Hiring a car in Brussels allows you to visit some of Belgium's other charming cities. Be sure to visit the Cathedral of Our Lady in Antwerp. It takes less than an hour to reach Antwerp from Brussels when you set off in your rental car. Known as Belgium’s “capital of cool”, this city of diamonds and designers can be explored on a day trip. Must-see attractions include the MoMu Fashion Museum, the museum dedicated to Rubens, and Grote Markt.
Beautiful Bruges can be reached by road in around 75 minutes from Brussels, which is also a reasonable drive for a day trip. When in Bruges take a tour around the picturesque city centre, intertwined with canals, chocolate shops and boutique breweries.
Further afield there are a number of cities that can be visited in your hire car. Amsterdam, Luxembourg, Paris and Cologne are all within a three-hour drive of Brussels.
Despite the fact that Brussels is officially a bilingual city with a mix of French and Dutch speakers, it is possible to find English speakers in most places that you visit. One issue with this bilingualism is that town names on road signs can change as you drive along. Be sure to familiarise yourself with both the French and Dutch translation of a town's name before setting off in your hire car.
