Rotherham has more car hire outlets than most towns of its size, with national rental providers such as Enterprise and Hertz as well as local options.
You might secure the cheapest car hire deal by expanding your search to nearby Sheffield. Located just a 20-minute drive from Rotherham, the city centre is home to a wide array of rental outlets. Enterprise, Europcar, Hertz, Sixt and Thrifty all have offices in Sheffield.
Travelling to Rotherham by plane? The cheapest option might be to hire a car at the airport. Doncaster Sheffield Airport (formerly known as Robin Hood Airport) is 30 minutes from Rotherham. Several national car hire operators have offices here, including Avis, Europcar and Hertz.
The other two nearest alternatives are Leeds Bradford and Manchester airports, both of which are about an hour from Rotherham. Operators offering airport pick up from Leeds Bradford include Avis, Budget and Europcar, while Manchester Airport is home to eight big-name car hire brands.
Rotherham is positioned between the M1 and M18. Driving around town couldn’t be easier. There are more than 20 council-owned car parks; those near the city centre include Drummond Street, Clifton Hall, Wellgate and Forge Island.
Once you’re parked up, the town centre is best explored on foot. Rotherham won the town centre category at the Great British High Street Awards in 2015, so expect to find plenty of eclectic independent shops and cafes as well as chain stores around the historic High Street and Market Place. If you prefer cultural attractions to retail therapy then check out the famous Heart of Steel sculpture in the Minster Gardens or visit the Theatre and Arts Centre, which is housed in a converted church.
There are plenty of attractions on Rotherham’s fringes and further afield, making car hire an excellent way to expand your enjoyment of the area.
For family fun, visit the Magna Science Adventure Centre, set in the former Templeborough Steelworks, to have a go at over 100 hands-on activities – including the world’s highest indoor bungee jump.
The pumping nightlife and cosmopolitan eateries of Sheffield are just a 20-minute drive away, while Leeds is a 40-minute car ride up the M1. For a true adventure, drive half an hour to the edge of the Peak District and lose yourself in the stunning scenery of this undulating national park.
