The cathedral and Abbey Church of St Albans dominate the ancient city and its roots as a centre of pilgrimage date back to the 3rd century. No visit to St Albans would be complete without a walk in the Heartwood Forest. As the largest native wood forest in England, its free car park makes it easy to visit and you can enjoy walks in the ancient woodland, looking out for barn owls.
The area is also packed with impressive country houses. Hatfield House is set in parkland and is a fine Jacobean mansion open to the public for viewing. You can also enjoy the farm and shops on site, as well as restaurants and cafes. Elizabeth I spent much of her childhood here and it has plenty of history to become engrossed in.
Knebworth House and Gardens are just a few miles from St Albans near Stevenage and contrasts nicely to Hatfield, being a Gothic mansion. You can explore the house on tours, as well as the gardens and its dinosaur hunt. The location is well known as a venue for rock concerts, with Oasis, Robbie Williams and Led Zeppelin the most famous over the years. The house has also been used for pop videos.
For fans of Harry Potter, it's just a short drive to the Watford area to enjoy the Warner Brothers Studio Tour of film sets and items from the famous film franchise. Visit Hogwarts and its Great Hall, walk along Diagon Alley and ride a broomstick on a Harry Potter themed flight. It's great for both kids and adults alike.
For animal lovers, Woburn Abbey and Safari Park or Whipsnade Zoo are both within striking distance from St Albans. Woburn is home to elephants, tigers, lions, giraffe, rhino and much more, with the animals kept in the glorious countryside of the park.
