Check into hotels in Playa de las Americas, the nightlife capital of Tenerife, to spend days lounging in the sun and nights partying in the excellent bars and clubs.
Journey to Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands, and make a beeline for Playa de las Americas, which is located on the south coast of the island between Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje. The young and the young at heart love the energy of this resort, while families and couples also flock here for the fantastic beaches. Try your hand at water sports on the blue waters of the coast or visit the flumes and pools of the nearby waterpark.
Playa de las Americas is the place to be if you want to let your hair down at any time of the year. The wonderful mild climate of the Canary Islands means that the sun shines and daytime temperatures rarely drop below 18C, even in January. You can shake off the winter blues by spending a day on the beach and then shaking your tail feather in the evening at a pub, bar or club at the party hotspots of the Veronicas Strip, the Patch, and Starco Commercial Centre.
In Playa de las Americas, hotels are available to suit everyone's holiday requirements...
There are hotels at the heart of the action as well as quieter hotels that families prefer. You'll find budget hotels around the resort, plus elegant four- and five-star hotels that offer a peaceful break in the sun. There are self-catering apartments and well-equipped villas. Around the excellent golf club you'll find some luxury hotels, many of which offer rejuvenating spa facilities. There really is a place to suit all sorts in Playa de las Americas.
It's a large resort, so pick a hotel near the beach if you plan to spend a lot of time on the sands. Some of the hotels can be as far away as a 20-minute walk, which families with young children might not appreciate. Those wanting peaceful nights should concentrate a search for hotels away from the night-time antics of places like the Veronicas Centre.
Get out of the resort and tour the highlights of this Canary Island...
Hire a car during your Tenerife holiday to get about quickly and cheaply. There's a lot to see on the island, so you won't regret it.
Top five attractions
The oriental-themed waterpark is just minutes from the resort and will fill an entire day with splashes, swims and slides.
Visit the Teide National Park to see the highest peak in Spain. You can take a cable car to the top for far-reaching views of this astonishing volcanic landscape and the glittering waters of the Atlantic in the distance.
Another family favourite, this animal park is well worth the 75-minute car journey from the resort.
Whale or dolphin watching
You can see marine mammals in their natural environment too when you book tickets aboard one of the many boats that take holidaymakers to view the dolphins and whales that swim in the waters around Tenerife.
For a change of scene and pace, head for the capital of Santa Cruz. Here you can explore a Tenerife of old or shop in the many stores and boutiques.
It doesn't matter when you visit Tenerife, there is always something happening...
As well as the thriving nightlife scene, the Canary Islands celebrate saints and mark age-old traditions almost once a month. There's always a party somewhere.
Three Kings; January: Spend Christmas or New Year in Playa de las Americas to see one of the most charming aspects of the festive season on the island. The “Three Kings” parade through towns and villages and bestow gifts on children to mark January 5, a sort of Christmas Eve in these parts.
Carnaval; February/March: This is heralded as the biggest carnival in all of the Canary Islands. Santa Cruz is where you'll see processions of outrageous costumes and everybody having a really good time.
Arona Summer Festival; August: This yearly feast of dance music attracts large crowds. It's in the peak summer season, so hotels are unlikely to be any busier than normal at this hugely popular holiday time.
