Puerto Banus is a luxury marina situated between Marbella and San Pedro in Spain. It is frequented by the rich and famous and about five million visitors annually. They flock to the area for its marina, shopping and entertainment.

Puerto Banus is on the Costa del Sol and is the place to spot celebrities on multi-million-pound yachts, or frequenting the many bars, clubs and restaurants located behind the harbour. It is renowned for its shopping, as the streets are lined with luxury boutiques like Christian Dior, Versace and Gucci. One particular stretch of shops is known as 'The Golden Mile' and Puerto Banus is also home to the biggest El Corte Ingles department store in Spain. The marina is the main attraction of Puerto Banus, where some of the wealthiest people in the world dock their boats.

There are also plenty of golf course and spas in the area, many attached to the luxury hotels in Puerto Banus. The Linekers have a bar in the area and you are sure to spot a few celebrities hanging out there, including the famous TOWIE crew!

If you can stop the celebrity spotting for a minute you will also find that the Puerto Banus landscape has other attractions. You could hire a boat and enjoy some sailing, take in the landmark La Concha Mountain, and, of course, enjoy the beach - there is one on each side of the marina. There is also a three-ton statue of a rhinoceros by Salvador Dali.

Most Puerto Banus hotels are located in the port area, so you won't have to carry your shopping too far. Apart-hotel complexes are common accommodation options. Nueva Andalucca is another popular place to stay. Marbella is only a short drive away and there is an abundance of accommodation available here too, including at chain hotels like H10, Melia and Iberostar.

Being the best time to visit, the summer months are also the busiest months, so it is best to book your accommodation well in advance when the sun shines.

Top five attractions

Plaza Antonio Banderas

Yes, “that” Antonio Banderas. Spain's favourite actor has a public square named after him. Surrounded by the odd bar and restaurant, the plaza really comes alive at least once a week when it hosts a busy craft market.

La Victoria 

Overlooking the port is the magnificent statue of La Victoria (The Victory). Standing almost 30 metres high, this giant bronze landmark was given to Puerto Banus by the mayor of Moscow as a gift to celebrate the opening up of east-west tourism and as a nod to the wealthy Russian oligarchs who regularly moor their yachts under its watchful eyes.

Costa Water Park

Brilliant fun - and not just for the kids. This is a slightly different take on a traditional waterpark as all the slides, trampolines, climbing walls and jumping cushions are floating in the sea.

The Boulevard

Possibly the biggest attraction any visitor to Puerto Banus enjoys is simply walking the boulevard and checking out - open-mouthed - the glittering gathering of luxury yachts that line the marina while trying to ogle the line-up of Ferraris, Lamborghinis and Bentleys on your other flank.

Casino Marbella

Head for the Andalusia Plaza Hotel and you'll find this dazzling casino where the playboys leave their yachts behind and gamble vast sums of money on the turn of a card. Of course, you don't need to own a Porsche to play; there are tables for beginners too. The casino restaurant, hailed as one of the finest dining experiences in Puerto Banus, is also worth a visit.

Corpus Christi; June: This religious spectacle can be seen throughout Spain, but in Puerto Banus and Malaga, Corpus Christi - the honouring of Christ's body in the water - seems to hold special significance. Huge processions, led by local dignitaries and military personnel, take place the first Thursday after Trinity Sunday and the festivities continue throughout the night.

Starlite Festival; July-August: It's one of Spain's biggest arts events. Fashion, film, art and food are the support acts to a host of singers and bands who line up to perform at the Marbella Auditorio.

Feria de San Pedro de Alcantara; October: Each year nearby Marbella comes to life in an explosion of colour as people don their finest clothes for a week of dancing, feasting and fun. Women will be dressed in flamboyant flamenco outfits for the event, which begins with a parade of giant heads and concludes a week later to the backdrop of a magnificent display of fireworks.
